Without a Union, employers have 100% control over their employees, and total authority to make all decisions.* Non-union employers are free to play favorites. They can give a relative or friend the best job, the best schedule, or the best pay. Without a union, many workers lack paid days off, health care, retirement benefits, and the peace of mind knowing they cannot be fired indiscriminately.

That’s where organizing comes in. A union contract brings fairness and order to the workplace. It defines wages and benefits, working conditions, and ensures fairness in scheduling, job assignments, and in the event of layoffs.  And union workers make more: 30% more than their non-union counterparts. That number jumps to 44% more when you include the value of health and welfare benefits.*

And organizing helps current members as well. Like any organization, unions need to grow to remain vital and effective. More members make us stronger, and give us more influence at the bargaining table and in the political arena (where laws benefiting workers are created). The larger and more active our membership is, the more outsiders take us seriously and are less likely to try to push us around. As a union, size does matter.

There are many ways you can help. If you know of someone who is being treated unfairly by their non-union employer, have them call our office. John Cakmakci would be happy to talk to them about their rights, and the process of joining a Union if they’re interested.

Or you could help with an organizing campaign. If we hear of a workplace that could use union representation near where you work or live, or in the same industry as you are in, we may ask for your support since you know firsthand the benefits of union membership.

If you have any questions about organizing, talk to your Union Representative or contact John Cakmakci at 1-800-999-0951 extension 174.
