At UFCW 951, you are the Union. That means you are part of a community of members
who support one another. While your dues
are important to our financial well being, your
involvement adds far more. When you attend a
meeting, vote on your contract, help out a
fellow member, or become a steward, you are
supporting the Union and the community.
We're proud of our Union and want you to be,
too. That's why we recognize members who wear
their UFCW 951 buttons or snap-back name badge
holders. Members 'caught' wearing these items by
the Union Pride Patrol will receive a
certificate, a gift card, and their photo in our
quarterly newsletter.

Union Pride winners.)
We've created a publication called the Owner's
Manual which describes in detail 951's
philosophy on what it means to be a part of our
Union. Click on the link if you'd like to learn
more.

Local 951 has also prepared a Quick Start Guide.
It will help you get started with your Union
membership.

What Union Membership means to you |
Your contract includes a requirement to belong
to the Union. This is often known as a 'union
shop.' The idea behind a union shop is simple.
Just as the members of a nation enjoy the
benefits of citizenship, they are also bound by
the laws of that nation, including the
requirement to pay taxes. That's how it is with
a union, too. All union members enjoy the wages,
benefits and other protections covered by the
contract, so all belong and pay dues.
We use dues money to
bargain and administer contracts; to train
Stewards and Union Representatives; to represent
you when your rights have been violated; and to
keep you informed through meetings, publications,
and this website. At UFCW 951, we are committed
to keeping your dues as low as possible.
Dues cannot be used
for political purposes. Money used for political
action comes from separate, voluntary
contributions from concerned members.

The dollars and cents of it |
The UFCW International Constitution sets the
dues rate for UFCW members across the country.
UFCW 951 pays roughly half of your dues to the
UFCW International one month in advance, also
specified by the International Constitution. The
current monthly dues formula is your rate of pay for two
hours plus $12 (or the UFCW International
minimum of $26.08).
No dues are collected during your first four
weeks of employment. After that, you will notice
double dues deductions for the next four weeks.
This procedure allows 951 to avoid the large, up
front initiation fee charged by many other
unions.
Dues are recalculated only once a year (with
the exception of Knouse), the date of which
varies by employer.
That means that
despite any raises you receive over the next
year, your dues amount will not increase.
(Click
here to view the dues recalculation calendar.)
If you have any questions regarding dues or
deduction amounts, you can call the Grand Rapids
office and ask for the Membership Records
Department.
