Foundation's Purpose Well Received by Members

November 1, 2011 - For over a decade, the UFCW Local 951 Foundation has been helping working families and building stronger communities thanks primarily to the generous support of UFCW 951 members.

The Foundation, through the Community Services Department, supports over 100 fund raisers in a typical year. They are organized by members to assist fellow members experiencing a crises. Each year, the Foundation also awards $40,000 in scholarships to Local 951 members and their eligible dependents.

"Through the financial assistance it provides, the Foundation makes an important difference in members' lives," Marv Russow, UFCW 951's president and Foundation board member said. "Thanks to the Foundation, some members have been able to go to college, it has enabled others to put food on the table and keep the lights turned on, and helped others rebuild their lives after a family tragedy."

Helping community partners is also a priority of the Foundation. The Foundation supports a variety of groups including the American Diabetes Association, American Cancer Society, Feeding America, The Hispanic Center of Western Michigan and the Ray West Memorial Ramp Project.

"By partnering with local and national community groups, the Foundation has been able to help create opportunities for union members," Russow said.

Currently, the work of the Foundation is primarily supported by 3,000 members who make voluntary donations to the Foundation through payroll deductions.

"Maintaining, and possibly expanding, the Foundation's work requires additional funding," Russow said. "Which is why the local has kicked off a Foundation Membership Sign-Up Drive."

Union representatives and stewards will be asking members to consider a 40 cent weekly donation to the Foundation.

"We know times are tough and every penny counts, so we are asking members to make a small weekly contribution that, when added to the small weekly donations of other members, adds up to a significant amount of funding for the Foundation," Russow said. "Working together through the Foundation, UFCW 951 members can help one another through difficult times."

The local has established the goal of increasing Foundation support to 15 percent of the membership, or approximately 4,400 members by Fall.

To create some friendly competition between units, Local 951 will hold a recognition luncheon at the Meijer Retail and Non-Meijer Retail unit in each of the local's three regions that has the highest sign-up. In addition, the most improved unit in each region will also be recognized with a unit luncheon.

"I was going back to school whether or not I got the scholarship, but I applied for a little extra help. Because of the $2,000 I got from the UFCW Local 951 Foundation Scholarship, I did not have to take financial aid this semester. This was a huge help to me!"

For each school year, the Foundation awards 19 scholarships worth $2,000 and five $400 textbook scholarships to eligible members and their dependant children to be used at any college, university, community college, or post-high school vocational program.

To be eligible for a Foundation Scholarship, the student or student's parent must be a UFCW 951 member for at least one year and remain a member in good standing during the entire academic year. The Wayne State University Labor Studies Department evaluates all Foundation Scholarship applications regardless of where the student will attend.
