The Benefits of a Union Contract

Before Unions came along, employers were free to play favorites among the workforce. They could give a relative or friend the best job, the best schedule, or even the best pay. At non-union workplaces, that is still the case. But a union contract brings fairness and order to the workplace.

A contract defines working conditions such as seniority rights, scheduling, and grievance handling and economic issues such as wages, paid time off, and health care. Union workers know how much they will make, and when and how they will get raises- and union wages are better. Study after study over many decades has demonstrated that in comparable workplaces, union workers make more money. (click here for more details)

Conflicts and questions can arise between workers and manager in any workplace. Under a union contact, however there is an established means of answering questions and resolving disputes. Workplace rights and privileges are defined and protected in favor of all the workers. UFCW 951 continues to negotiate contracts that protect the voice of working people throughout the state of Michigan.
