The History of UFCW 951 |
|
UFCW 951 was chartered by the federal
government in September of 1951, hence the name "951." At that
time, we were known as the Consolidated Independent Union (CIU),
and only represented 200 Meijer workers. By 1972 the Union had
grown to 5,000 members, and a campaign began to affiliate with the Retail Clerks International
Union. After a six-year campaign, the goal was finally achieved.
951 discarded the title of CIU and became Local 951 of the
Retail Clerks International Union.
In 1979 the Retail Clerks
merged with the Meat Cutters and
Butcher Workmen to form the United
Food and Commercial Workers International Union. The 1980's brought mergers with UFCW Local 20
and UFCW
Local 36, adding approximately 3,500 new members to the Union. With
the expansion of Meijer and active organizing campaigns, UFCW
951 has continued to grow and now represents over 28,000 members
statewide. Our members work in the retail, manufacturing,
processing and health service fields.
We have come a long way. The power and
clout of UFCW 951 has grown far beyond its original 200 members.
