Tamara Vander Ark – Executive
Vice President
Tamara
grew up in West Michigan in a family closely
linked to Meijer and UFCW 951. Her mom
worked for Meijer for 24 years and was a 951
Steward for 18 years. Tamara’s father
was once involved with providing Meijer with
leased vehicles, which Tamara occasionally
helped to deliver. She graduated from Calvin
College with a degree in sociology, emphasizing
social work and psychology.
Working at UFCW 951 since 1994, Tamara
has filled a variety of roles. She’s
been a Union Representative and a Representative
Team Leader in both the Detroit area and West
Michigan . She’s also worked behind the
scenes at 951 in membership records, benefits
administration, Steward recruitment and training,
and human resources. Tamara joined the Executive
Board in 2000 and has been reelected twice.
According to UFCW 951 Secretary/Treasurer
Larry Radke, “Tamara’s experience
with health care and other benefits as well
as being Director of Contract Administration
gives her a good understanding about what’s
at stake for our members both on a daily basis
and when we go to the negotiating table.”
Currently, Tamara
serves as Executive Vice President and Director
of Contract Administration. She also chairs
the UFCW Local 951 Foundation—responsible
for over $50,000 in college scholarships to
951 members and their children each year.
Looking forward,
Tamara sees a busy, but exciting time for
our Union : “We
will build on our successes in the past like
the Benefits Agreement at Meijer as well
as expand our efforts to reach out to the
community. Everyone has a stake in having
good jobs with good benefits and good pay
in our communities, no matter where they
work.”
