Orchard Grove Nursing Home Workers Vote to Join
UFCW 951
By an 5 to 1 margin, workers at the Orchard
Grove Nursing Home in Benton Harbor, Michigan
voted on Thursday August 17 to join United Food
and Commercial Workers Union (UFCW) Local 951.
Fifty workers voted for the union while ten were
opposed. The voting was conducted under the
National Labor Relations Act and supervised by
the National Labor Relations Board.
“We think 951 is a great fit for us,” said
Jennifer Taylor, a leader of the union campaign
at Orchard Grove. “They already have members who
work in the nursing home field, they are widely
respected throughout Michigan and we like their approach to working with
employers to improve conditions for the patients as well as the
workers.”
“We are delighted to welcome these new members
into the 951 family and we look forward to
building a constructive relationship with the
management of Northpointe Senior Services, the
owners of the Orchard Grove facility,” commented
UFCW 951 President Marv Russow.
UFCW 951 represents 33,000 members who work
across the state of Michigan at Meijer,
Harding’s, Plumb’s, Polly’s, Kroger, Kessel,
Rite Aid, Knouse Foods, Fry Krisp, and Dowagiac
Nursing Home. UFCW 951 has two offices: a headquarters at 3270 Evergreen
Drive in Grand Rapids opened in 2005 and a satellite office in
New Hudson, Michigan west of Detroit and employs
39 highly trained and skilled professionals, 21 of whom are Union Representatives
in the field.
